Shual

Alef is a humanist sans-serif Hebrew typeface for the Israeli web. But Alef represents much more than a typeface design project, in fact Alef was a cultural initiative for re-asserting Hebrew cultural identity into the Israeli web. Before Alef, the entire Israeli web was set using the bastardized Hebrew characters of the default typeface — “Arial”. We stirred the fight, initiated the project, shared the design process on a blog, open-sourced the font files, and launched the typeface in a public event. Like we hoped, Alef indeed marked a turning point and launched a new age of Hebrew digital typography.
